Indonesia should ratify the Rome Statute on ICC

International Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC) which is based in New York is campaigning for the ratification of the Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court (ICC) by Indonesia. The campaign which is called Universal Ratification Campaign (URC) happens in the whole month of July 2011 (http://iccnow.org/?mod=urc0711). Every single month, the CICC targets particular country.

The URC of Indonesia in July 2011 was of the request of the Indonesian Civil Society Coalition for the International Criminal Court (Koalisi Masyarakat Sipil untuk Mahkamah Pidana Internasional) whose members among other are Elsam, Imparsial, PSHK, IKOHI, Kontras, YLBHI, FRR and many others. The Indonesian Coalition is a member of the International Coalition for the ICC (CICC).

As part of the initiatives of the URC, the CICC along with its thousand members will send letters to the Indonesian authorities, including the President and the Parliament calling for the speedy process of ratification (http://iccnow.org/documents/CICC_PR_URC_Indonesia_05072011_FINAL%281%29.pdf).

The same initiatives will be taken by Indonesian Coalition and its members. Besides, the Indonesian Coalition will also carry out activities within the month July, among others lobby meeting with authorities, press conferences and public forum. The culminating activity will be on the occasion of the World Day of International Justice on July 17.

Indonesia actually already planned to ratify the ICC in 2008. This plan was mentioned in the National Plan of Action on Human Rights (RANHAM) 2004-2009. But it missed the plan.

Then in the newly launched RANHAM 2011-2014, Indonesia is planned to ratify the ICC on the third year (2013).

However, with the positive development made by Indonesia related to international human rights commitment, with the pressure and support by civil society, the ratification of the ICC by Indonesia will happen much sooner. Indonesia get only the benefits from ratifying the ICC.
